Guardians: recognising a Face through its threat

An identity that enters the run

An environment can be recognized through its colors, but also through a threat that represents it. A guardian places that identity within the action: it has a presence the pilot must observe as well as an appearance that distinguishes the location.

The first ALEXX SkyRider™'s Gate associates guardians with specific Faces. It presents turrets for Day and Night, a gargoyle for Cemetery, a Yeti for Snow / Arctic, and a Stone Man for Canyon. [G38] Their shared role and visual identities coexist within the route.

Recognize the figure and understand the action

Identifying a guardian locates the scene, but its participation still needs interpretation. The guide provides two concrete examples: the Yeti attacks with a burst of three projectiles, and the Stone Man throws a rock. [G38] These describe actions rather than provide complete instructions for resolving the encounters.

Observation can distinguish the guardian's presence, the beginning of an attack, and the visible trajectory of its threat. That division describes what happened without assuming one larger figure follows another's rules.

Recognition should also be distinguished from prediction. Knowing which character is present does not guarantee knowledge of the exact moment of its next action. Attention must remain on the ship's situation and available space.

What it contributes to the route's story

The Yeti connects the encounter with Snow / Arctic; the Stone Man places it in Canyon. [G38] The figure identifies the environment, and its attack introduces a specific action for the pilot to observe. A Face can be remembered through its landscape and through what happened when approaching its guardian.

A burst of three projectiles and a thrown rock provide two different references for describing those encounters. [G38] When reviewing a run, the ship's position and the attack's visible trajectory matter: those details describe the maneuver associated with the character, beyond its appearance.

In ALEXX SkyRider™, guardians form part of reading the route. Their identities help locate the Face, while their actions require piloting decisions. The encounter becomes meaningful when players relate what they recognize to what they need to do to continue.
